Thanks to my 4 kids who surprised me with their hand-made greeting cards, complete with long messages... and they waited for me to come home even at 1:30 this morning... (over the weekend, j & i went to ilocos, north of manila, about 12hrs drive...i had to alternate with the driving)

Thanks to my good friend L who even bothered to give me chocolates this morning.  Malapit na kita ampunin. 

And no thanks to someone for being such a pain and who made my weekend miserable.

So there I was in that conference room, together with around 8 engineers.  The idea was that we watch the model together (the presiding engineer, usually the piping guy, operates the computer and we can see every nook and cranny of the entire plant), checking, measuring, going around each equipment, etc.  It was really like watching a movie because there was this large projector, the room was dimly lit and cold.  So it was so hard not to fall asleep.  Since I only handle the steel structures, I wasn't an active participant in the meeting.  Needless to say, I always got lost in the discussion, well, maybe because my mind would be somewhere else after being bored for some time.  And this piping guy seemed to read my mind, because everytime I was in reverie, he would suddenly ask me questions.  aaargh. 

By the way, the model review took 5 loooong hours.  Torture.

So time to give back to mother earth.  Last Friday, volunteers from our office headed to Bukid Kabataan Farm in Gen. Trias, Cavite and planted banana trees on their farm.  Bukid Kabataan is sort of a shelter for abused children.  Our company pledges support for this center, year in and year out. 

I brought along my 3 kids - Pauline couldn't make it coz she was sick.   (Of course, hubby was there also)  Anyway, we had fun, and the kids appreciated the tree planting and helping the environment.  Not only that, I guess they now realize how lucky they are to have parents like us, heh-heh.

I love girl rockers and the Aegis band suits this category... And what's more, this band is true-blue pinoy! 

A very popular song of Aegis is "Halik" and this song is particularly memorable.. it reminds me of this Filipino band (sorry, forgot the name... anybody who knows?) which regularly played in Henry-J Beans in Pattaya, Thailand.  The lady lead singers sang this specially for us, a group of pinoys working in Thailand at that time... I remembered we didn't know exactly the lyrics of the song and we would just sing along when the line would go... "Ang halik mo... nami-miss ko... bakit iniwan mo ako....."

Anyway, the movie was "One More Chance" starring John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo.  It was lightly mix of funny and sad scenes, and as usual, I cried while watching.  And this happened a lot of times.  Perhaps this is why I don't want to watch tearjerkers in movie houses.

Then it's another level when it comes to American slang english.  And how they pronounce certain words only them would understand.  So don't blame me if I choose to have closed captions (english subtitles) when watching DVDs...

I read this from a local newspaper years back (should I say decades?)... american phrases and how they're spelled (and heard/translated) by pinoys:

SKIDADA HIIIR -- often said when wanting to leave (let's get out of here)

SKO -- shortcut of skidada hir (let's go)

So from thereon, when we wanted to leave, we'll just tell each other, "o, skidada na ba tayo?" or "o ano, skidada na!"

Then these phrases we made up in college:

"Huh, can't hear you, house and lot again?"

"Aaaw, you must be kidney!"

So back to the lunch.  We were a big group, around 15.  I was seated between 2 ladies, Lady A is about my age, and Lady B is much younger.  A & B have been with the office longer than I've been, so they fairly know each other more than I know them... As we were waiting for the food,

A:  Hey, B, how's your baby?  Is she ok now?

B:  Oh yes, she's doing very well now.  The doctor said she only had slight pneumonia...

Misty: (remember I'm seated between them) Huh! B!!! I didn't know you got married!  All along I thought you were single!  (I was about to say "congratulations" when she interrupted me...)

B:  Oh no, misty, I'm still single but I have a baby...

awkward moment...

Misty:  uhm (trying to recover from the awkward moment)... so how old is your baby?

B:  she's already 5 years old...

(still awkward here... I was very tempted to ask... so how did you have the baby?  who's the father?  where's he now?  what happened???  but then, i resisted...)
